Folklore: In Neo-Druidism, the rowan is known as the portal tree, marking the point between this world and the Underworld. It was often placed at the gate to a property, signifying the crossing of the threshold between the path or street and the property. Its Old English name is cwic-beám, which survives in the name quick beam. By the 19th century this name was reinterpreted as connected to the word witch and so is known by a number of names such as wicken tree, wich tree, wicky, wiggan tree, witch hazel and witch tree.

Notes: The Rowen grows white flowers and red berries which are the colours of the Fey. This signifies that this is a magic tree with affiliations to witchcraft. Dowsing rods were commonly made from twigs as witch-wands. It has clear visionary qualities to help working in the astral or dream states. It also is known to feed the soul.
